Mentheus of Caledor was a High Elf general and Dragon Prince during the reign of Phoenix King Morvael the Impetous. [1a][2][3c][4b]
Contents
Family
He had a son, Altheus, who was one of the main candidates to succeed Morvael. [2]
History
Following the massacred invasion (to avenge the assassination of Phoenix King Aethis the Poet) of Naggaroth, the Dark Elves once more invaded Ulthuan in 1131 IC. They rebuilt their ancient fortress of Anlec.[1a][2][3c][4b]
Phoenix King Morvael, understanding his own lack of warfare experience, appointed Mentheus as general of the High Elf armies by the in 1133 IC. A system of mandatory military service for citizens was introduced: elves must spend part of the year in the military, providing their own wargear. [1a][2][3c][4b] [Conflicting Sources]
In 1146, Mentheus finally lifted the siege of the Griffon Gate which it had been enduring since he became general. [1a][2][3c][4b] In this battle he had been aided by the young Mage Caelith Fireheart who mounted on Dragon Rilgaur carried out a devestating charge, subsequnetly, Mentheus would name him as the first Dragon Mage in honour of his bravery. [3b]
Over a century of warfare still followed as High Elf Fleets fought Dark Elf Fleets over the control of the seas. At home, Morvael brooded over the horrors of war and nightmares and increasingly grew dependent of his close advisors.[1a][2][3c][4b] Mentheus ever remained the Kings closest confidant and friend and he provided much councel to Morvael.[4b]
Mentheus was slain whilst besieging the Dark Elves at Anlec in 1501 IC - his dragon Nightfang became enraged and routed the enemy. News of the death of Mentheus drove Morvael to kill himself in the fires of the Shrine of Asuryan. The Dark Elves had been finally forced from Ulthuan. [1a][2][3c][4b]
Mentheus would have been the preferred candidate to succeed Morvael, had he been alive. After a deadlock between Altheus and Kregan of Yvresse, the Ninth Council chose Bel-Hathor of Saphery.[1a][2][3c][4b]
Weapons, Armour and Equipment
Mentheus used the magical Blade of Leaping Gold throughout his campaigns until his death. [4a]
Writing
Mentheus wrote a number of books on warfare and tactics, some of which are still kept at the Tower of Hoeth as the finest examples of their kind. [3a]
Conflicting Sources
- Conflicting Sources: 7th[3c] and 8th edition[4b] states that Morvael created the militia system while 4th[1b] and 5th[2] edition seems to imply that Mentheus created it, but it can be read both ways.
